An increasing number of religious scholars and Biblical experts have identified the United States of America as the Great Whore of Babylon described by John the Baptist in the Book of Revelation through divine inspiration (Chapters 17 & 18).
In opposition to classical and neo-classical interpretations of the identity of the Great Whore of Babylon as the embodiment of a historical empire, many biblical scholars believe the Great Whore is a modern eschatological end-times manifestation, specifically, the United States.
“And he saith unto me: The waters which thous sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.”

Certain scholars believe that the current actions and characteristics of the United States conclusively match those of the Biblical description of the Great Whore described within the Book of Revelation (Chapters 17 & 18).
Among these scholars, Bilblical scholar Rick Coombes believed he had conclusively identified the Great Whore as the United States. Coombes’ identification of the United States as the Great Whore of Babylon can be found within his published book titled ”The Babylon: America’s Destiny Foretold In Biblical Prophecy” (1998).
Coombes also gave a detailed lecture based on his book to an audience of Christians in 2003.
Biblical scholar S. Douglas Woodward and D.W. Krieger had also identifed the United States as the Great Whore in their published book titled ”Final Babylon” (2013).
An increasing number of other biblical scholars, analysts, and commentators have similarly identified the United States of America as the Great Whore of Babylon in recent times. Woodward stated that such identifications of the United States as the Great Whore would continue to increase with time due to increasingly clear pattern and characteristic matching of the United States against the description of the Great Whore.
Biblical analyist Roger King identifies the United States of America as the Great Whore of Babylon in his book titled ”The Judgment Babylon: The Fall of America” (2015).
Biblical analyst and religious commentator Michael Fortner identifies the United States of America as the Great Whore of Babylon in his book titled ”The Fall of Babylon the Great America” (2015).
The Coombes Identification
According to Krieger, the Coombes identification later achieved profound interest within the Biblical studies community because of his in-depth matching of every identifying characteristic of the description of the Great Whore to the modern characteristics and actions of the United States.
Coombes believed the true identification of the Great Whore would remain a mystery to humanity until events and circumstances in the United States itself and the world permitted a positive identification. Coombes believed that the identity of the ”harlot riding the beast” was intended by God to remain a mystery until a given time. Coombes believed that no other nation on earth could match the characteristics of the Great Whore when combined with the timing of events, other than the United States. Coombes performed his analysis and diagnoses with concordance to the original Greek using interlinear tools.
Coombes viewed the United States as a war-mongering morally bankrupt wealthy nation which had departed from Christianity and descended into paganism, a ”fallen” nation, after which divine judgment would be done upon America.
Coombes believed the United States would experience two ‘falls’ prior to its judgment: one moral, and the other economic.
